After two back-to-back meetups for our Trump Travel Ban Series, it’s time to take a break from #resist-ing President Orange’s latent racism and take a quick detour back to our Comfort Series for some SOUL FOOD! While chicken & waffles are as ubiquitous to DeRM (cuz he’s bla…African American) as rice & beans are to me (I’m Puerto Rican), we are going to plow through DeRM’s soul-food-snobbery to visit one of the highest regarded soul food spots in the country: Amy Ruth’s.
Foolinary Trivia: this is the first meetup organized at a place that the lead Foolinary (me) has already experienced. Years before I met my brother-from-another-mother DeRM, I wanted to see what soul food was all about so I drove to Amy Ruth’s in Harlem. Unfortunately, this was during the time when I was at peak buffoonery in regards to my food palette. I did not experiment at all and had what Amy Ruth’s is most known for: their chicken & waffles. This is not to say that chicken & waffles is a bad meal but I don’t believe that it’s the best representation of what soul food has to offer.
Amy Ruth’s delivers on the true soul food variety and does us a favor by applying black celebrity names to each dish on their menu.
